Are the roof racks removable for storage clearance?

While most of our accessories can be removed, the ATD roof rack is securely bolted in place and may require some coordination to remove and replace without causing any damage to the aluminum siding. Please carefully consider your storage space requirements before placing your final order, so that we can make arrangements to accommodate them.

Is there a bathroom in the trailer?

Unfortunately, the American Teardrops currently do not have a bathroom in the sleeping quarters or cooking galley. These areas are not spacious enough, and most individuals prefer not to have a toilet in those spaces. However, there are alternative options available for outdoor adventures. Some people choose to bring a porta-potty, utilize a potty tent, or make use of nearby restrooms (or even a tree in certain situations).

What is the difference between your custom and pre-built trailer options?

For over 2 decades we have been crafting custom designed teardrop trailers to meet the needs of each individual client, one trailer at a time. However, we understand the need for immediate availability. Which is why we offer two different trailer options.

Custom-built trailers Our custom trailers are tailored to each customer's specifications and are built on an annual build calendar, allowing us to produce one trailer every 7 business days. These trailers are constructed from scratch using high-quality materials such as steel, Baltic birch, aluminum, and various selected options and accessories. The advantage of choosing a custom trailer is that you have the opportunity to actively participate in the design process, selecting the configurations and features that best suit your needs.

Pre-built trailers On the other hand, our pre-built trailers follow a standard design that streamlines the manufacturing process, enabling us to have several trailers available for pickup at any given time. While these trailers are not fully customizable, you do have the option to add certain accessories to meet your specific requirements. One advantage of opting for a pre-built trailer is that you can physically see and inspect the trailer before making a purchase decision.

How much storage space are on the trailers?

Our trailers offer ample storage space for all of your needs. The galley area features 3 drawers that are specifically designed to store cooking equipment such as cook stoves, pots, pans and silverware. An ice chest compartment provides a space for cold food storage and cabinets above provide 7 cubic feet of storage space. In the cabin there is an additional 7 cubic feet of storage above the foot of the bed. Two of our models, the Eagle and the Harrier, include a storage headboard for easy access storage. Some of our packages also feature tongue storage and roof racks. Tongue storage is a popular feature that includes trays, platforms and tongue boxes up to 56” wide. Our roof rack options available to support basket and cargo containers of various sizes and shapes.

Accessories & Add-Ons

What are the options for upgrading to a lithium battery?

At American Teardrop, we have traditionally used Group 24 and Group 27 lead acid batteries. However, our Deluxe package now offers the option to upgrade to a lithium battery. This upgrade increases your trailer's capacity to 125 usable Amp / Hrs. Additionally, the Deluxe upgrade includes one lithium battery, and you can add more depending on your nightly power consumption.

Are custom paint colors available?

Although there is an additional cost due to local EPA regulations, we offer the option to paint the trailer with any color automotive paint for approximately $3500. We obtain personalized quotes from local businesses when placing the order to guarantee the most competitive prices.

What can be customized?

At American Teardrop, we offer extensive customization options for our trailers. We have the capability to customize nearly anything on the trailer according to your preferences. However, it's important to note that customization can incur additional costs as it requires significant adjustments to the design, engineering, construction, and testing processes. Therefore, while we can accommodate your customization requests, the cost-effectiveness and value of the customization will ultimately depend on your specific needs and budget. Here are some examples of customization options and their associated costs:- Painting the trailer to match a vehicle: $3500- Painted cabinets: $2500- A/C system installation: $600- Bunk bed addition: $300

Where is the stargazer window positioned?

There's nothing quite as wonderful as a peaceful night with no light pollution, lying on your back and gazing at the stars. And there's nothing better than being in your cozy American Teardrop bed, looking up at the stars through the stargazer window. The window is located right above your head when you're lying down, giving you a full view of the beautiful sky. With the stargazer window directly above you, you can enjoy an incredible sight of the celestial wonders - stars, moon, comets, and even lightning storms.

How much additional solar power does the add-on provide?

The solar products provide charging for your 12V battery system. With an option to add one or two solar panels, charging time can decrease by nearly 50%. Here’s what you can expect: Controller Output Current with a Single 100W Solar Panel: With a 20A controller and a single 100W solar panel, the maximum output current from the panel would be up to 8.33A under ideal conditions. The controller ensures that the panel's output does not exceed its rated capacity, protecting both the controller and the battery.Controller Output Current with Two 100W Solar Panels in Parallel: When you connect two identical 100W solar panels in parallel, the total wattage is 200W, and the voltage remains the same. The current from each panel is added together. In this case, with the 20A controller, the maximum combined current output from both panels would be 16.66A under ideal conditions. Therefore, recharge time should nearly drop by 50%.

What are the dimensions of the roof rack?

Our roof racks are custom made for each individual trailer, ensuring a perfect fit. Depending on the model, they can span from 3 to 5 feet in width. The 1.25 square cross member is ideal for accommodating baskets, bike racks, storage boxes, roof top tents, awnings, and water tanks.

What is the weight capacity of the roof rack?

Our roof racks are designed to support up to 300 lbs while in motion and up to 600 lbs when stationary. However, it's important to note that the roof rack does not have a way of determining whether the vehicle is in motion or parked. Therefore, we recommend keeping the weight on the roof rack below 300 lbs while driving. This is because wind resistance and vibrations can put excessive strain on the cabin walls. On the other hand, when the vehicle is stationary, the roof rack can safely hold considerably more weight, such as three individuals in a rooftop tent.

Can I add a receiver to hold a bike rack?

Absolutely! All three of our packages come with the option of a 1.25 or 2" receiver that is capable of securely holding your bikes - whether it's a mountain bike, road bike, kids bike, or even an e-bike (just make sure to check your tongue weight if you're adding e-bikes). Simply slide your preferred bike rack into the receiver, insert the safety pin, load your bike, and you're ready to hit the road!

What size tongue box comes standard?

Storage is crucial for any adventure. Whether you need to store firewood, climbing equipment, fishing gear, or any other items you’ll need on your adventure, having ample storage is essential. Our standard package comes with a steel tongue box located at the front of the trailer. This tongue box typically accommodates the battery, taking up approximately ¼ of the nearly 3 cubic feet of storage space. However, we understand that this may not be enough for some customers. That's why we offer the option to add additional storage. You can choose from commercial tool boxes or our specialized adventure boxes, which feature drawers, side doors, and even outside kitchen accessories. With these options, you can add up to 56" of extra storage to your trailer.

What is included in the off-road kit?

At American Teardrop, we understand that not all adventures are created equal. Some require a more "off-road" approach. That's why we offer our off-road package, designed specifically for those boondockers and trailblazers who like to venture into rocky terrains and create their own paths. With a 3" lift, 225 70 R15 off-road tires, and a heavy-duty frame, your trailer will be fully equipped to tackle even the most rugged terrain. Additionally, for added support and control, we provide a 3000# independent torsion suspension with brakes. And if you're concerned about protecting the underside of your trailer, we also offer skid plates as an optional add-on.

How much capacity is there with the water storage add-on?

Longer trips into unknown areas can be less stressful when you have access to water. Whether you prefer 5 gallons on the side of the trailer or 21 gallons underneath, we offer systems to assist you. Our standard package allows for an additional 21 gallons of fresh water storage for any American Teardrop model. If your tow vehicle can handle it, a second 21-gallon tank can be added to double the capacity to 42 gallons, with two pumps and two outlets.

Can additional accessories be added later?

American Teardrop Trailers can be personalized with many of our trailer accessories such as outside tables, roof racks, spare tire mounts, and propane/water tank holders. However, there are certain accessories that cannot be added after the trailer is constructed, such as sinks, air conditioning, and water storage. These accessories need to be included during the construction process. Please refer to our package descriptions and discuss your accessory ideas with your ATD representative.

What are my color options?

American Teardrop Trailers are typically white, but there are two upgrades available: matte gray and brushed aluminum. If you have a specific color in mind, we can also get aluminum trailers in Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Blue. Additionally, we offer custom colors upon special order. Another popular option is two-tone trailers with different colors on the side and roof. Please check with your ATD representative to see if your desired color combination is available. Keep in mind that special color orders may incur an additional cost ranging from $800 to $1800.

Your vehicle must also have either a 7-way (required for brake-equipped trailers) or 4-way electrical connection. We strongly recommend reviewing your vehicle manufacturer's guidelines on towing trailers.
  3. Excitement: We understand that picking up your adventure on wheels can evoke various emotions. Some customers may feel overwhelmed by the visual experience and tour of the trailer, while others may appreciate the attention to detail. For those who already have exciting adventures planned, this moment can be truly exhilarating!

Please don't hesitate to ask any further questions or seek clarification during the pickup process. We are here to ensure your trailer experience is enjoyable and hassle-free.

Can you ship my trailer to me?

Delivery can be done in various ways. Some customers prefer to handle their own delivery, while others may request us to obtain a quote for delivery and include it in their invoice. Additionally, we offer delivery services for certain locations. Please note that each option is subject to different fee structures, which are based on factors such as distance and time required for delivery.

Can I purchase accessories after I pick up my trailer?

Some of our accessories are more suitable to be added after the trailer is completed. This is especially true for outdoor accessories such as tables, storage, roof racks, and more. Please ask your ATD representative if the accessories you want require professional installation or if they are ready for DIY installation.

Do I need to insure my trailer?

American Teardrop does not make recommendations or advise on insurance. However, here are some considerations to help you determine if you should have insurance on your travel trailer:

  • Legal Requirements: The legal requirements for travel trailer insurance vary by location and jurisdiction. In some places, insurance is mandatory for any registered and roadworthy vehicle, including travel trailers. Check with your local DMV or relevant authorities to understand the legal requirements in your area.
  • Financing: If you financed the purchase of your travel trailer through a loan, the lender may require you to have insurance as part of the loan agreement. This is to protect their investment until the loan is paid off.
  • Liability Coverage: Liability insurance on your travel trailer can protect you in case you cause damage to someone else's property or injure someone while towing or using your trailer. This type of coverage is generally advisable.
  • Physical Damage Coverage: Travel trailer insurance can also include coverage for physical damage to the trailer itself. This is important if you want to protect your investment in the event of accidents, theft, or natural disasters.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Depending on your insurance policy, you can also get comprehensive coverage that protects against other risks, such as vandalism, fire, or severe weather damage.
  • Personal Property Coverage: Some travel trailer insurance policies may include coverage for personal belongings stored inside the trailer. This can be especially important if you carry valuable items when you travel.
  • Full-Time RVing: If you live in your travel trailer full-time, you may need a specialized insurance policy designed for full-time RVers.

How do I register my trailer?

Upon picking up your trailer, our team members will provide you with all the necessary information to register it in your home state. If you are a resident of California, we will also supply you with the CA DMV form. To complete the registration process, you will need to have the following documents ready: your certificate of origin, VIN information (which can be found on your trailer), and your trailer invoice.

If you are purchasing our brake package, this connector is required. Passion

We understand what it’s like to crave discovery

That’s why we’re committed to making it a reality for our customers. Here’s what some of them have to say about American Teardrop.

Easy ordering, handled design changes easily. Early enough that they were happy to do it. Delivery was about 5 weeks early. Big surprise! Since I was ill at the time, they went out of their way to deliver it to my daughter's house about an hour away at no charge to me.
I personally saw it for the first time last night. Pulled it home today. It’s exactly what I ordered! Can’t wait to get moved in and put it into action.

James J.

It was an amazing experience to have our teardrop built to the specifications we requested. It was great working with Bud and Linda.  Best of all was being able to rent a teardrop before we purchased, helping to make our decision more clear.

Rose M.

I rented one of their trailers for the weekend. I'm 6' 2" and the camper was surprisingly well insulated and comfortable with 2 people for its size and weight. I couldn't feel any extra weight while towing the trailer up to tahoe. I will definitely rent from them again and plan on purchasing one of their trailers if I see myself renting the trailer often.

Sean T.

Bought our custom built trailer July'15. Took approximately 3 months given the queue ahead of us. Writing this post 2 years since taking possession.Let me start w/ LOVE the trailer! Wife and I use to be tent campers, but this was quite a chore. No central place for all our camping gear, meaning invariably leaving something critical in a bin at home. The self "deflating" air beds we used in the tent were also quite annoying. Having this trailer greatly simplified our camping trips. Since buying, we have averaged ~1 trip per month, through all types of weather. Rock solid build quality. Easy to tow. Very comfortable to sleep in, not only because of the 6" of memory foam, but also this thing is so quiet inside. Noisy camping neighbors are not an issue.Bud is the owner and builder, and his advice on which options to get or not was spot on for our build. Even after ownership, I brought the trailer back to Bud for a couple of issues, both created by me, Bud stepped up and fixed the trailer at a more than generous price. He would even add some idiot proofing to the trailer to ensure I wouldn't "break" it again.Great proprietor and product!

Ed F.

American Teardrop builds a fantastic teardrop trailer. It is beautiful to look at, functionally designed, super roadworthy, and shows excellent craftsmanship. Bud and Linda were a total pleasure to work with, and took all of my questions, option tweaks, and more questions with friendly, timely professionalism. We could not be happier with the finished product! Tom and Liz Patterson - Seattle, WA

Tom P.

We bought our Merlin 5'x9' teardrop from American teardrops in late 2016. Bud always has a waiting list for his teardrops so we ordered it months a head. We added a sturdier frame for off roading, and more kitchen cabinets .As a building contractor I'm well aware that little things will sometimes go wrong- But Bud and Linda have always been there  for us- once with a small water issue and the other time modifying a latch for us. We love our Merlin. We transitioned from camping and find we get out as much more  now- and are always looking forward to the next time!. We like having a minimalist camping  experience and having an outdoor kitchen. The interior is great with a queen size bed and  6" foam . . When we arrive at a campground we can park and head off hiking and in the am we just close up the doors and can move on.
